Standard FeaturesUpgradeable ProcessorGreat works of art should never go out of date, which is why all SuperMac computers allow you to upgrade to a faster processor without having to replace the entire motherboard simply by inserting a new processor card. In addition, all SuperMac S Series machines have an Advanced Scalable Processor Design (A.S.P.D.) secondary processor slot placed next to the primary processor slot. This gives you the option to easily and inexpensively upgrade to a dual processor machine by adding a P-series A.S.P.D. Processor card. Most third party upgrade CPU cards can be used to upgrade the SuperMacs' primary processor, but only a P-series Processor fits into the S Series' A.S.P.D. secondary processor slot. Bear in mind that when you do upgrade the processor, it must come from the same processor family. Thus, PowerPC 604- or 750-family ("G3") processors are required for the S and J Series, while PowerPC 603- or 750-family processors are required for the C Series. IX Micro Twin Turbo Graphics/Video AcceleratorDeveloped by IX Micro (formerly known as IMS, Integrated Micro Solutions), the TwinTurbo is widely regarded as the best graphics/video accelerator on the market. Using a 128-bit wide memory bus and an ultra-fast 32-bit PCI bus interface, the TwinTurbo makes common tasks such as scrolling and screen redraws more responsive. Users of graphic applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, will be especially impressed at how quickly their changes appear on the monitor. Referring to how the RAM inside your machine is configured, interleaved memory improves the way memory is accessed, boosting its performance by 10 to 15 percent. The SuperMac S900, S910, and J700 ship with 16 to 64 Megabytes (depending on the model) of interleaved RAM. Any DIMM memory you add can also be accessed in an interleaved manner, but the extra RAM must be placed in the DIMM slots in a specific manner. For more information on how to add DIMM modules, see the KnowledgeBase. PCI-to-PCI BridgeThe SuperMac S900, S910, and J700 models make exclusive use of the DEC 21052 PCI-to-PCI bridge to improve system performance in any applications, such as multimedia, in which a PCI option card is being utilized. The PCI-to-PCI bridge allows data to travel directly between each of the PCI slots at more consistent and higher data rates because it's not being routed through the main memory and doesn't have to share the same PCI controller that manages the I/O circuitry. OptionsDesigned for S900, S910, and J700 machines, the E100 Extended Performance Card greatly enhances the performance of your computer's I/O subsystem by providing both Ultra-Wide SCSI III and 100Base-T Ethernet on a single, easy-to-install PCI card. The Ultra-Wide SCSI III quadruples regular SCSI performance by allowing 16-bit wide data access to disk storage at a screaming 40 Megabytes per second (Mbps) transfer rate. The 100Base-T delivers a ten-fold increase over the standard 10Base-T Ethernet found in most
P-Series Processor Because of its unique second processor slot, the S900 or S910 can be upgraded to this workstation-type machine. With most computers, you would have to swap out the entire motherboard to upgrade to MP. All you have to do with the S Series is to add a P-series A.S.P.D secondary processor card. Available at speeds of 180 MHz and higher, a P-series processor card dramatically increases the speed of applications that have been created to run on MP machines.
